Our Story

In 2013, two friends - Kevin and Todd - had worked for years at a nonprofit setting up micro-businesses in developing countries. Their work took them to places like Haiti, Honduras and Tanzania, where they made one common observation: Lack of resources, not lack of ambition, is the greatest obstacle to escaping poverty. Basic tools - hammers, saws, shovels - were in short supply and the need seemed to be unmet by philanthropic programs. So they launched ToolLife, a 501(c)(3) organization that collects and distributes tools that people need to work, escape poverty and improve their communities. Very quickly they learned that the most universally desired, cost-effective and easiest-to-use tool is the sewing machine. Working with other nonprofits and schools around the world, they distributed sewing machines and other equipment in impoverished cities and villages. This led to a collaboration with Nashville clothing designer Sandra Ney and Singer Sewing Co. that expanded into product design and project consulting. They experienced such great success that, in late 2015, ToolLife launched Sewn Together as its own separate program. Today, the program has distributed machines, equipment, patterns, fabric and knowledge in Honduras, Haiti, Tanzania and Moldova - and is looking to expand even further with other partners in other countries.
